Cherry Ehrlich

Using a wide variety of materials or found objects, Cherry combines and transforms them into abstract sculptures that she calls ‘no-things’. Whether they are made from fragile scraps or robust materials her pieces evolve into thoughtful, somewhat quirky sculptures.

In unmaking past work and making again there's a search for identity and stability - though perhaps rarely achieved. Her method of working results in an aesthetic that can be described as ‘barely-made’ though the reverse is the case. She is currently enjoying the immediacy of drawing, often working on a large-scale with recycled paper and children's wax crayons, whilst at the same time exploring how far she can push the use of her studio space with new installations.

'I like my work to have a playful quality. I make objects and assemblages from discarded materials and scraps;  used paper, cardboard, wire, wood, found objects with a tactile or visual quality.  I stick, scrape, soak in glue, draw under and on top of surfaces, push, cut and twist materials seeking resolution. I hope the viewer finds resonance in my art.

Cherry Ehrlich draws inspiration from artists such as Eva Hesse, Louise Bourgeois and Philip Guston as well as her tutors at Kensington and Chelsea College and University of the Arts (Camberwell College of Arts), where - having escaped a past life in public service - she was delighted to graduate with a BA (Fine Art, Drawing)in 2007. Based at ACAVA's Stewkley House Studios in  West London she continues to pursue her creative ambitions combined with family caring responsibilities.
